The Experience

Worth leaving the pool for

You're in the cradle of the Argolid — ancient theatres, a sunken city off the beach, harbour towns and citadels, all within a short drive. A few of our favourites.

Summer Nights · Ancient Theatre

Tragedy under the stars

Each summer the 4th-century-BC Theatre of Epidaurus — famed for acoustics so fine a whisper carries to the back row — fills for the Athens Epidaurus Festival on Friday and Saturday nights. In 2026 opera returns to the ancient stage, with the Greek National Opera reviving Cherubini's Medea, the very production Maria Callas sang here in 1961. Book ahead; the best nights sell out.

The Little Theatre

Intimate music and dance nights in old Epidavros (late June to early August) — a short drive, lovely at dusk.

Swim the sunken city

Just off the bay, the remains of a submerged ancient town lie under clear, shallow water — mask, snorkel, and swim above the ruins.

Nafplio

Greece's first capital: a Venetian harbour, the Palamidi fortress on the hill, and dinner by the water. About an hour by car.

Mycenae

The Bronze-Age citadel of Agamemnon and the Lion Gate, an hour inland through the vineyards of the Argolid.
